Can you get into AI work without a computer science degree? Some entry paths exist, but pay and job titles vary widely. This guide covers four beginner-friendly areas, the skills each needs, what official data says about pay, and how to avoid AI-themed job scams.

US pay figures come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for May 2025. Many AI job titles are new, so BLS tracks them under broader occupations rather than by name.

Data labeling

Data labeling (also called data annotation) means tagging text, images, audio or video so AI systems can learn from them. It is often project-based contract work done online.

Typical tasks:

  • Tagging objects in images or video
  • Rating or ranking AI-written answers
  • Transcribing or checking audio
  • Sorting text by topic, tone or accuracy

Pay: BLS does not publish a wage figure for data labelers or annotators. Pay on contract platforms varies by project, skill and country, and hours are often not guaranteed.

Specialist reviewers with subject knowledge, such as coding, medicine or law, may be paid more than general taggers. Treat any listed rate as an estimate until you see a written contract.

Who it suits: detail-focused people who want flexible online work and can tolerate repetitive tasks.

Prompt and content work

Companies use writers and editors to draft prompts, test AI tools, and edit or fact-check AI output. "Prompt engineer" is a popular title, but there is no official wage data for it.

Typical roles:

  • Content writer or editor using AI tools
  • AI output reviewer or fact-checker
  • Technical writer for AI products
  • Prompt writer or tester

Pay (BLS, May 2025, closest tracked occupations):

  • Writers and authors: median $36.98 an hour ($76,910 a year)
  • Editors: median $37.46 an hour ($77,920 a year)
  • Technical writers: median $43.46 an hour ($90,390 a year)

BLS does not track "prompt engineer" as an occupation, so be cautious of salary claims you see online. Most writing and editing jobs typically require a bachelor's degree.

Who it suits: strong writers and editors who enjoy testing tools and explaining complex topics clearly.

AI support

As businesses adopt AI tools, they need people to help customers and staff use them. These roles mix customer service with technical support.

Typical roles:

  • Technical support specialist for software or AI products
  • Customer support agent for AI apps
  • Help desk analyst
  • Chatbot or knowledge base support specialist

Pay (BLS, May 2025):

  • Computer support specialists: median $30.24 an hour ($62,890 a year)
  • Customer service representatives: median $21.53 an hour ($44,770 a year)

User support specialists typically need some college courses, and BLS notes IT certifications can open doors with only a high school diploma. BLS projects computer support jobs to decline 3 percent from 2025 to 2035, so expect competition.

Who it suits: patient problem-solvers who like technology and talking with people.

Data analyst

Data analysts clean, study and present data, and many now use AI tools in their work. It is a common stepping stone toward data science roles.

Typical roles:

  • Junior data analyst
  • Market research analyst
  • Operations research analyst
  • Data scientist (with more experience)

Pay (BLS, May 2025):

  • Market research analysts: median $37.87 an hour ($78,760 a year)
  • Operations research analysts: median $42.76 an hour ($88,940 a year)
  • Data scientists: median $57.80 an hour ($120,230 a year)

BLS projects data scientist jobs to grow 35 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average. Most roles typically need a bachelor's degree in maths, statistics, computer science or a related field.

In the UK, the National Careers Service lists data analyst-statistician salaries from about £28,000 for starters to £65,000 with experience. It also lists apprenticeships, including Level 4 Data Analyst and Level 6 Data Scientist.

Who it suits: people who enjoy maths, spreadsheets and finding patterns, and who are willing to learn tools like SQL.

Watch out for data-labeling and task-site scams

Fake "AI training" and online task jobs are a growing problem. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes task scams that work like this:

  • An unexpected text or WhatsApp message offers easy online work.
  • You "rate," "boost" or "optimise" products or apps and see earnings grow on screen.
  • To unlock more tasks or withdraw money, you are told to deposit your own money, often in cryptocurrency.
  • The deposit is lost and the earnings never arrive.

The FTC says task scam reports went from zero in 2020 to about 20,000 in the first half of 2024. Its advice is simple: never pay anyone to get paid.

How to apply safely

  1. Never pay a fee for a job offer, "training," a starter kit or to unlock tasks.
  2. Ignore unexpected job messages by text or WhatsApp; the FTC says real employers do not contact people that way.
  3. Search the platform or company name with "scam," "review" or "complaint."
  4. Do not deposit a check from a new employer and send part of it back.
  5. Read the contract terms on pay rates and payment schedules before starting work.
  6. Report fraud to ReportFraud.ftc.gov (US) or your national fraud service.

Where to see current openings

  • United States: USAJOBS, the federal government's official job site, and CareerOneStop, which the FTC lists as an official job source.
  • United Kingdom: GOV.UK Find a job for England, Scotland and Wales.
  • Canada: Job Bank, run by Employment and Social Development Canada.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an AI job with no degree?

Some paths exist. Data labeling and support roles often focus on skills, and BLS notes IT certifications can help support candidates with a high school diploma.

How much do prompt engineers earn?

There is no official figure. BLS does not track prompt engineering as a separate occupation, so treat online salary claims with caution.

Are data-labeling jobs legit?

Some are, but scams are common. If a platform asks you to pay to unlock tasks or withdraw earnings, the FTC says it is a scam.

Which AI-related job has the strongest outlook?

In BLS projections, data scientists stand out, with 35 percent growth expected from 2025 to 2035. These roles usually require a degree and strong maths skills.
