Are legit work-from-home jobs still out there in 2026? Yes, but they sit alongside a growing number of fake offers. This guide covers four common remote job types, what they pay according to official US data, and how to tell a real employer from a scammer.

Pay figures come from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS); readers elsewhere can use them as a rough reference.

Customer support

Customer support is one of the most common remote job types. Many companies run phone, chat and email help desks with staff working from home.

Typical roles:

  • Customer service representative (phone, chat or email)
  • Order and billing support agent
  • Help desk or technical support agent (entry level)
  • Appointment or reservation agent

Pay: BLS median for customer service representatives is $21.53 an hour ($44,770 a year), May 2025. BLS notes that working from home is possible at some companies.

A high school diploma is the usual entry requirement. BLS projects a 5 percent decline from 2025 to 2035, so competition can be strong.

Who it suits: patient people with clear speaking and typing skills, a quiet workspace and reliable internet.

Writing and editing

Writing work moved online early and remains largely location-free. Much of it is freelance or contract.

Typical roles:

  • Content writer or copywriter
  • Editor or proofreader
  • Technical writer (manuals, help articles)
  • Social media or newsletter writer

Pay (BLS, May 2025):

  • Writers and authors: median $36.98 an hour ($76,910 a year)
  • Editors: median $37.46 an hour ($77,920 a year)
  • Technical writers: median $43.46 an hour ($90,390 a year)

BLS reports that about 65 percent of writers and authors are self-employed, and that they can work wherever they have a computer. Most of these roles typically require a bachelor's degree, often in English, communications or journalism.

Who it suits: strong writers who can meet deadlines and find their own clients or contracts.

Tech and data

Tech roles offer some of the highest remote pay, but they usually need proven skills. Not every tech job is remote; some require onsite or client visits.

Typical roles:

  • Computer user support specialist (remote IT help)
  • Web developer or digital designer
  • Software developer or QA tester
  • Data scientist or analyst

Pay (BLS, May 2025):

  • Computer support specialists: median $30.24 an hour ($62,890 a year)
  • Web developers and digital designers: median $99,520 a year
  • Data scientists: median $57.80 an hour ($120,230 a year)

BLS says some computer support specialists can telework, while others must work onsite. Data scientist jobs are projected to grow 35 percent from 2025 to 2035.

Who it suits: people with certifications, a portfolio or a degree in a technical field.

Admin and bookkeeping

Back-office work such as scheduling, data handling and bookkeeping can often be done remotely with cloud software.

Typical roles:

  • Virtual or administrative assistant
  • Bookkeeping clerk
  • General office or data clerk
  • Accounts payable or receivable assistant

Pay (BLS, May 2025):

  • Secretaries and administrative assistants: median $23.23 an hour ($48,310 a year)
  • Bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks: median $24.36 an hour ($50,670 a year)
  • General office clerks: median $21.64 an hour ($45,010 a year)

Entry usually needs a high school diploma or some college. BLS projects declines for all three from 2025 to 2035, but still expects many yearly openings.

Who it suits: organised people comfortable with spreadsheets and accounting software.

How to spot work-from-home scams

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that job scams often target people looking for remote work. Watch for these signs:

  • You are asked to pay. Honest employers do not charge you to get a job, for "starter kits" or for certifications.
  • A check arrives with instructions. If you are told to deposit a check and send part of the money back, it is a scam.
  • Reshipping "jobs." Receiving packages and forwarding them, often overseas, is a known scam.
  • Pay that sounds too good. Large earnings for little work is a classic warning sign.
  • Task or "app optimization" offers. The FTC describes task scams that start with unexpected texts or WhatsApp messages, show fake earnings, then ask you to deposit your own money, often in cryptocurrency.

The FTC says task scam reports rose from zero in 2020 to about 20,000 in the first half of 2024. Job scam losses topped $220 million in those six months.

How to apply safely

  1. Never pay a fee for a job offer, training kit or "guaranteed placement."
  2. Ignore unexpected job texts or messaging-app contacts; the FTC notes real employers do not recruit that way.
  3. Search the company name with "scam," "review" or "complaint" before sharing personal details.
  4. Do not deposit checks from a new employer and send money back.
  5. Talk the offer over with someone you trust.
  6. Report fraud to ReportFraud.ftc.gov (US) or your national fraud service.

Where to see current openings

  • United States: USAJOBS, the federal government's official job site, and CareerOneStop, which the FTC lists as an official source.
  • United Kingdom: GOV.UK Find a job for England, Scotland and Wales.
  • Canada: Job Bank, run by Employment and Social Development Canada.
  • Australia: Workforce Australia, the government's employment service.

Filter for "remote" where available.
